The Situation
A Corktown homeowner reached out after their original 1920s carriage house doors had deteriorated beyond repair. The wooden panels were warped, the hardware was rusted through, and the doors no longer sealed properly. Michigan winters were blowing straight into the garage.
The challenge: replace the doors while preserving the historic character of one of Detroit's oldest neighborhoods. The home sits on a street with strict preservation expectations from neighbors, and the owner wanted doors that honored the building's century-old architecture.
Our Approach
We started with an on-site consultation to photograph the original door style, measure the opening, and discuss wood species and hardware options. We recommended a custom-built carriage house door in solid cedar with a dark walnut stain to match the home's original trim.
The doors feature period-appropriate strap hinges and ring pulls in hand-forged iron, plus arched window panes in the top panels that match the style seen in historic photos of the neighborhood. Behind the traditional look, we installed a modern track system with a custom wood garage door installation approach that provides smooth, quiet operation while looking entirely authentic from the street.
The Result
The finished installation drew compliments from neighbors on day one. The cedar doors stain beautifully, the iron hardware adds authentic weight and character, and the modern track system means the doors operate with one finger. The homeowner now has doors that honor Corktown's history while performing like a 2025 product.
"They understood exactly what we needed. Doors that look like they've been here for 100 years but work like brand new. The craftsmanship is outstanding."
